SEO and SEM, how to create a comprehensive strategy?

Seo sem

SEO and SEM positioning strategies aim to achieve greater visibility on the internet, so they are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary, creating a joint strategy is the best bet to achieve brand recognition, positioning, and increased traffic to your website, as although they share the same goal, they employ different routes.

Differences between SEM and SEO

SEM refers to Search Engine Marketing or search engine marketing, which encompasses techniques to improve a website's positioning through paid advertising for a selection of keywords on Google.

Meanwhile, SEO or Search Engine Optimization, search engine optimization, seeks to increase the website's visibility in organic search results through the optimization of images, keywords, titles, meta descriptions, and site content.

The main differences between an SEO strategy and an SEM strategy are:

  • Investment. We tend to believe that an SEO strategy is free since we are not paying for ads. However, maintaining a website in good health and optimized not only requires budget investment but also effort and time to achieve medium- and long-term results.

  • Time. As mentioned earlier, since SEO works organically, results are expected in the medium and long term, while an SEM advertising campaign achieves results in the short and medium term.

  • Space. The space or place occupied by both strategies is also different since SEO focuses on search engine results like Google, while for SEM, we can design different types of ads, such as search results, video, or display. Visit our previous post to learn about these and more types of SEM campaigns for your digital marketing strategy.

  • Content. SEO is based on creating quality content for the website, which is usually in longer formats like landing pages or blog posts, unlike the content in SEM campaigns which often have a limited number of characters.

SEO and SEM Strategy

As we can assume, SEO and SEM complement each other to achieve greater visibility for our website, but how do we design a comprehensive search engine positioning strategy?

The first step is to conduct a thorough search of the keywords relevant to our website and select those with the highest search volume that can attract more traffic to the site. There are various tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, Semrush, or Moz that will help you conduct a complete analysis of each keyword and its results.

Based on the keyword analysis, we can define the type of content for our SEO strategy and the type of SEM campaigns that will perform best to achieve our goals. Keep in mind that it's not about including keywords without reason throughout your site. The user's search intent and the results they expect to obtain when "Googling" is something you should not forget to generate valuable content, content that invites your visitors to spend more time getting to know your website and your brand.

If you don't have the possibility to launch both strategies simultaneously, starting with paid advertising campaigns (once your website is well optimized for SEO) will be a good starting point to attract visits and clicks to your website more quickly, thus achieving positive results in a much shorter period.

Remember that positioning through SEO is a job that will yield results over a much longer period but will be more durable, so it is essential to continue designing an SEO strategy to complement your SEM campaigns and ads efforts.
